Chevrolet is bringing quite a bit of hardware to the 2013 SEMA show, but if you’re a fan of old-school, muscle-bound sport trucks, there’s only one vehicle that will truly catch your eye: the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne concept.
Although the Cheyenne moniker is a bit of a misnomer -- it used to indicate a low-buck, sub-Silverado trim grade on C/K pickups – one quick look at the 2014 Silverado Cheyenne concept will immediately trigger flashbacks to the 1990-1993 454 SS
. The regular-cab, short-bed 2014 Silverado is painted a glossy metallic black, although its bright blue accents are a stark contrast to the red highlights of the older Silverado sport truck. In lieu of a receiver hitch, the Cheyenne boast a neat center-exit exhaust routed through the rear bumper fascia.
The rolling stock, which consists of 19-inch wheels and high-performance tires, looks a little small in the Silverado’s massive wheel wells, especially by SEMA standards. But once you take a closer look, you realize why they’re important: they’re the same 19-inch aluminum wheels used on the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.
Behind those wheels, you’ll also find the same carbon ceramic disc brakes used on the Z/28
. Peek inside the cabin, and you’ll even discover the Z/28’s massively-bolstered Recaro bucket seats, along with a Z/28-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel. Even the customized hood boasts louvers inspired by those on the Z/28.
Sadly, the raid on the Z/28 parts bin doesn’t go so far as to include powertrain. Pop the hood, and you’ll find nothing more than an aluminum-block 6.2-liter V-8, an engine not readily offered in short-bed, regular-cab 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickups. The aluminum-block 6.2-liter V-8 offers a stout 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, which represents increases of 65 hp and 77 lb-ft over the 5.3-liter V-8, the largest eight-cylinder enginee usually offered in a regular-cab Silverado.
So, how does the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne concept offer some go with its show? Weight. Much like how Chevrolet tried to strip extra mass from the 2014 Camaro Z/28, the same tactic was used with this Silverado concept. An aluminum drive shaft helps, as do composite leaf springs, but the single biggest contribution (literally) to a reduced curb weight is the inner pickup bed. Look closely – it’s entirely made of carbon fiber composite. We’re not sure we’d want to actually haul anything but derriere with such an exotic, expensive pickup bed, but it does play a big part in the Cheyenne shedding nearly 200 pounds. Chevy claims the Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne concept can sprint from 0-60 mph in a respectable 5.3 seconds.
Is this all just a SEMA flight of fancy? Perhaps, although Jim Campbell, director of the Chevrolet Performance brand, likes to point out his team will gauge reaction to the 2014 Silverado Cheyenne concept. A performance-oriented production Silverado isn’t necessarily entirely out of the question, but don’t expect it to boast a carbon-fiber pickup bed.
