Smaller diesel engine being considered by GM for their pickup trucks.

GM is considering offering a small displacement diesel engine for its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups.

The engine should boost fuel economy on the trucks. A 4.5-liter V8 diesel could be added to the Silverado and Sierra 1500's lineup.

With Ford's unveiling of the new 2015 F-150, that makes extensive use of aluminum to shed weight and improve fuel economy (expected at 30 mpg), and the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel that has a fuel economy rating of 28 mpg, Gm needs to improve efficiency as its best fuel economy offering on a pickup right now is 24 mpg.

Its a good move, not everyone needs a truck for the same use. Some people even get trucks without actually making use of everything a truck has to offer that a sedan, suv, etc can't.

I think that this move is 1. to keep up with its competitors and 2. to appeal to people who like the idea of the truck but don't necessarily want to use the truck for more utilitarian functions. Trucks are super popular right now. The more variety they give people, the more sales will go up IMO.

This is purely a reaction to the increasingly hyped up Ram 1500 Ecodiesel.

It is a good move.

If the EcoDiesel is a good seller it just means that there IS a demand for a small truck with a fuel efficient diesel that is still capable of most tasks.

Not sure what else there is to say..

Go for it GM!

All signs point to success.

I read up more on the ram diesel engine, ecodiesel, it's a 3.0 V6.
Do you guys think Chevy will try to 1+ up them and come out with something more powerful with bigger displacement?
